  18. <p>     Army regulations exclude women from combat duty, but that
  19. rule was stretched when 771 female soldiers took part in the
  20. invasion of Panama, including several MPs who were involved in
  21. firefights. One officer, Captain Linda Bray, directed her
  22. platoon against a Panamanian garrison at an attack-dog kennel.
  23. Though no Panamanians were killed, as was originally reported,
  24. shots were exchanged.

  26. <p>     No matter, said the Army last week. The women are still not
  27. eligible for the coveted combat-infantryman's badge. The
  28. reason: regulations. By definition, the combat-infantryman's
  29. award is reserved for infantrymen who have been in combat.
  30. Still, the women who took fire in Panama are eligible for
  31. medals such as the Bronze or Silver Star. All Panama veterans
  32. are also entitled to transfer their unit patches from the left
  33. to the right shoulder, signifying combat experience. Bray's
  34. champions still applaud her pioneering role. Says Colorado
  35. Democrat Patricia Schroeder: "If you may be a soldier, what
  36. does it mean? It includes combat duty."
